*10. What’s Left of Me by Nick Lachey on What’s Left Of Me
Thoughts on this mix: I liked it. I liked it despite the weird mix of music. I liked the ups and downs. And I liked the emotion in each song. There’s a lot of love on this mix.
{and regarding #10 ~ SHUT UP! ~ it’s good, in a really cheesy, popstar, sentimental kind of way, so there.}
Today’s favorite songs: Lo Disco and Machine Gun.
The first one because it’s so lovely and personal (um, Dubtribe, you know, my brother), and the second because it got me up and dancing around the apartment in my undies ~ haha.
Today’s least favorite song: Human, but just because it was on last week’s mix, too.
Emotional Response: This one put me in a happy, I wanna go out and skip along the beach kind of mood.
Lyrics I love:
Go now, you’ve been set free.
Another month or so you’ll be poisoning me
With your lovely smile.
I see you slither away with your skin and your tail,
Your flickering tongue and your rattling scales
Like a real reptile. {from Reptile}
***
Using your mind
Imagine our skin
Joined at the hip
Joined from within
By using your eyes
Youre freezing my frame
Watching our clothes burst into flames {from Undress Me Now}
***
My, it’s funny how time flies
Feels like just the other day passed by
And I love the way you move, the way you talk, the way you smile
I was happy when you’d say “Stay awhile”
And you said you loved me
And I want to be your man and make you so proud of me
I think that we should get back together
Pretty you, silly me
Just think what we could be.
Take me Dancing, Take me to the disco
That’s where I wanna go
Take me dancing, take me out with you
That’s what I wanna do
Take me dancing, dancing {from Lo Disco}

cooling off

It’s hot. And it doesn’t seem to just be hot in the places where it would normally be uncomfortably hot at this time of year. It’s hot everywhere. And it is especially hot in Los Angeles for this time of year…
Today in the Eastern part of Hollywood it was 104 degrees, which is where I ventured to buy myself an air conditioning unit for my window. Inside Home Depot, people literally swarmed around the air conditioners and fans. I purchased a unit, jumped in my car and drove home to my very hot apartment.
Luckily because it’s closer to the beach, Santa Monica stays cooler than Hollywood, but because I live on the second of two floors, all the heat rises into my apartment. My apartment is always a good 10 degrees warmer that the air outside.
I decided not to wait for any help with the installation of my window unit (oh no!), so as you can imagine, fun times with tools ensued!
Perhaps these next several pictures will illustrate the whole story better than I can with words…
then…

which fell on my head on the way down…
Though it was a bit of a saga, the air conditioner is my new best friend.

empty and full

For the past month…or so (ok, maybe 3 months? ~ shut up!), my refridgerator has been practically empty. Finally, I got my ass to the grocery store and filled it up! Here’s the before and after…

Upon looking over my budget, I was appalled to see how much money I’ve been spending on dining out for lunch and dinner, so I’m making a new effort to make my lunch everyday and cook dinner at home. It’s truly ridiculous that it’s gone on so long now, ’cause really, I’m quite capable in the kitchen.
So far (today) I’ve been good. I set my alarm 15 minutes earlier and resisted hitting snooze 3 times, which actually got me out of bed 30 minutes ahead of time. I prepped my lunch and did the dishes, made some breakfast ~ which will help me save $3.10 from the Starbuck’s vacuum, and I’m still ahead of schedule.
I think I like this new routine. Maybe I can actually style my hair, too.

*4. Cold & Intimate by Nitin Sawhney on Prophesy

*8. Under Pressure by David Bowie & Queen on Best of Bowie
*9. Fade Into You by Mazzy Star on So Tonight That I Might See
*10. Mariposa Traicionera by Mana on Revolucion de Amor
Thoughts on this mix:
While I like all of these song individually, I was not a fan of them all together. This one is a little too eclectic. Because of my broad music tastes, I fear this will happen quite often…
A lot of times, songs that work in my “S” classes don’t work straight from the aliPod to my ears.
Today’s favorite songs: Winding Road and Mariposa Traicionera (both of these are good songs to start your day with)
Today’s least favorite song: Cold & Intimate (this artist was given to me by one of my students and I’ve never quite taken to it ~ time to purge the aliPod of most of Nitin Sawhney)
Emotional response: I was relieved that this shuffle ended with such a sweet, Spanish song. I was feeling a little anxious after the other songs. This mix had a heavier feel and it was too early for that.
Lyrics I love:
you wear sandals in the snow
and a smile that won’t wash away
can you look out the window
without your shadow getting in the way
oh you’re so beautiful
with an edge and a charm
but so careful
when I’m in your arms ( from Building a Mystery)
***
and I can see a little house
on top of the hill
and I can smell the ocean
the salt in the air
and I can see you
you’re standing there
and you’re washing your car
and I can see California sun in your hair (from Winding Road)
***
’cause love’s such an old fashioned word
and love dares you to care
for the people on the edge of the night
and love dares you to change our ways
of caring about ourselves (from Under Pressure)
