To the Girls…

Dear girl friends of mine,
I am so happy to have you all in my life… Though our lives have taken us to such different places (Utah, London, New York City, Virginia, Texas, Washington, Oregon and of course, Los Angeles) I am always so thrilled to see you!
When the built in reunions (weddings & bachelorette parties) lose their frequency, let’s be sure to continue to to get together and play. I am lit from within for days after seeing you…nostalgic with memories, proud of your accomplishments, tickled by your senses of humor and delighted to know you.
Thank you all for who you are!
Love,
*Ali
acting is weird

I love acting, but I’ve come to realize that it’s really weird. In a good way, I mean.
Tonight I had a callback for a play at the Alliance Theatre Company, where I am a member. I think it went well. I had to do a monologue where the character was wasted and in an Ecstasy-induced state of euphoria which causes her to want nothing other than sex.
Very fun to do indeed! And it made me giggle the whole way home.
Keep your fingers crossed, ’cause this is a role that would be really new for me…

Melanie stared at Jackson through the moonlight. It was one o’clock in the morning on the night of their second date and she was leaving the next morning for a week. She batted her eye lashes coyly and avoided his gaze.
“Why didn’t you kiss me after our first date?” he asked her, gripping her hand tightly.
“Why didn’t you kiss me after our first date?” she challenged.
“Are you kidding me? You jumped out of my car so fast I wouldn’t have had the chance to even attempt it!” he burst out.
“I know, well, it was awkward. I hate kissing across the console of a car…and as the first kiss. Come on, it would have been so awful,” she smiled.
“Well, you can’t leave for 7 days tomorrow without kissing me” he said pulling her closer and leaning up against the her car door to avoid her leaving.
“You’re right, I can’t leave for 7 days tomorrow without -” and suddenly his lips were pressed up againt her hard and soft all at the same time. The chemistry passed between them like an electric current dipped into a bathtub full of water. The kiss went on forever, sending sparks of passion from her head to her toes. His hand traveled absently over the curve of her butt and then back to her hair.
“How do you smell so good?” he grinned, his lips damp from their kiss.
“It’s called showering…and lotion,” she said giggling and biting her lip.
He squeezed her hand tighter, pulled her close again and whispered in her ear. “Are you sure you have to go home?”
“I’m sure,” she whispered back. She let go of his hand and he moved aside to let her climb into the car.
“Will you call me while you’re away?” he asked, holding the door open.
“Yes,” she answered and closed the door. She saw him watching her drive away through the rear view mirror.

Two weeks later Melanie sat on the couch in the living room of Jackson’s house. They had just returned from a short bike ride and the sun was quickly setting.
She watched him shuffle through his iPod, constantly asking her, “Do you like this song? What about this one? Or this one?” He ignored her flirting. She had exhasuted her attempts to make him laugh with her by dancing around the room. Instead of finding her funny, or charming, or adorable, he simply looked at her as if she were from Venus. Finally, she plopped down on the couch and got quiet.
He looked at her. “Hey.”
“Hey,” she said. She paused momentarily and then asked, “Don’t you think this is weird?”
“What?” he said without looking at her.
“Doesn’t it feel like we went from our first kiss to feeling like we’ve been together for 8 years?” she pushed.
“Yeah, I guess so…except, if that were the case, we’d be having sex right now.” he said, again without looking up.
Melanie was floored. At first she was mad. But then she reconsidered, reminded herself that she was talking to a male, and said, “Well, we don’t really know each other. It’s like we skipped over the ‘getting to know you’, and jumped right into the long-term relationship…do you feel that?” Melanie insisted.
“Yeah, but…I don’t know.” Jackson shrugged.
“Jackson, what do you find attractive? I know you don’t really like high heels, so…I mean, what is sexy on a woman?” Melanie asked.
“I find it sexy when a girl is just out of the shower and her hair is wet and she’s wearing a big, man’s button-down shirt…” Jackson smiled.
She raised her eybrows, knowing that that particular fantasy wasn’t her at all.
“What do you find sexy on a man?” he asked her.
Melanie looked up at him and studied his face with it’s rugged, five o’clock shadow beginning to show. “It depends, but a man in a suit is always sexy…and then later it becomes sexier when the jacket has come off and the sleeves are rolled up and the top button is undone, with the tie loosened around his neck.” And she laughed and added, “Or jeans and a well fitting t-shirt will do, too.” She paused, looking at him in the eyes.
Jackson walked over to her, grabbed her by the waist and pulled her up off of the couch. He wrapped his arms around her and they manuevered their way together across the room where he turned off the light and proceeded with his fruitles attempt at turning her on.
when to say when

When I arrive home from work in the evenings, my body is done. My brain is mush. And often I’m too tired for dinner. My apartment looks like a whole different person moved in ~ There are actually dirty dishes in the sink. There are piles of clothes everywhere. My plants need watering. And my laundry basket is filled to the brim. And I’m too exhausted to care!
This week I hit my limit. I am now learning how to say a very important word.
NO.
No, I won’t work 6 days a week anymore. No, I won’t teach 2 more classes next session. No, I won’t cover that class on my only day off. No, I won’t stand in as assistant studio manager on Saturday. No, I will not take on another responsibility around the office. No, I will not continue to worry about work-related issues when I’m not at the office.
I love my job and in order to continue to love my job, I’ve got to learn when to say when…
Why is it so hard?
